The marine iguana, found only in Galápagos, inspires strong reactions from visitors. Some find them adorable, others like Darwin did not: "They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea."

Called 'imps of darkness' they pay no attention to visitors and blend into the lava rock where they live. Twice a day they go to sea to graze on algae that grow on submerged rocks and then stretch out contently in the sun for the rest of the day.
