Ah, true love, frigate style! Frigatebirds, like most animals in Galápagos, created a colorful and memorable mating ritual.
The males puff up a gular pouch to make a huge red "come love me" heart-shaped balloon; then sit back on their perches in the green salt bushes and scan the sky looking for action. When a female flies overhead, the males yodel, vibrate their wings, shake their bodies and jiggle their balloons. It's the females who decide, landing beside the show-bird of their choice.
